Total Movies Watched Thus Far: 24

Army of Darkness
It's been a long time since I sat down and watched Army of Darkness. I bought the 4K blu-ray last year to accompany my Evil Dead Groovy Collection, and I thought it was time to give it a watch. As usual, it's a fun, relaxing flick to watch that feels so disconnected from the first two Evil Dead movies it's almost bewildering that it's made by the same folks. I'm sure nostalgia factors into my rating quite a bit.

VFW
I picked this film up on DVD a couple of months ago, and decided to give it a shot. It's a simple horror movie, with a slight grindhouse vibe and some great practical effects. It's low budget, and feels it, but I enjoyed this Assault of Precinct 13 style film.

Campfire Tales
I'm going to write more on this film later, but this was one of those direct to VHS horror anthologies of the 90s that I loved. It's gotten a remaster (although still no physical release) and I enjoyed revisiting it on Tubi.

Tamara
This Canadian horror film has been on my list for many years. I finally watched it, and I enjoyed it for what it was. It's similar to Carrie, but it's not Carrie. Kudos for just the right amount of gore in a horror film for me.

Cabin in the Woods
Here is another film I haven't watched in a very long time. I actually think I enjoyed it more this time around than the last time I saw it. It does such a great job at dissecting the "teenagers spending a weekend in a cabin" storyline, while still telling a solid story. The ending has aged better and better for me.

Slums of Beverly Hills
Continuing the thread of rewatching films I saw in my teenager years and haven't revisited, The Slums of Beverly Hills was a quirky movie I caught on the Independent Film Channel, back when they actually showed independent films and not sitcoms. I didn't remember much about it, but I really enjoyed this movie a lot more than I expected. It's a strange slice of life film set in the 70s.

Masterminds
Yet another film I used to watch as a teenager on HBO all the time. This family friendly take on die hard features a young Vincent Kartheiser (Pete Campbell from Mad Men) facing off against Patrick Stewart. It's 90's hacker vs. a prep school terrorist takeover and it's full of bad one-liners and pure goofiness.

Wishcraft
This early 2000's slasher film is one I never heard of but stumble upon on Tubi. It was unique in that it mixes a sort of genie's wish into the plot, but the pacing is a mess and for the first time ever, the age of the actors really bothered me. These were supposed to be high schoolers and they all looked over thirty. Oddly enough, it was directed by Richard Wenk who directed Vamp in the 80s and is now known for writing all kinds of action movies like The Equalizer series, 16 Blocks, The Mechanic, The Expendables 2, and the second Jack Reacher film.

The 4:30 Movie
This is the latest Kevin Smith, and I've been holding off on watching it until the right moment. I wanted my expectations to be low, and this week was perfect for it. This gentle film is sweet. It's nothing special, but it kinda reminds me of indie films from the 90s, which is always a good thing in my book.

The Chill Factor
This 1993 horror film was released on a budget label on VHS and then remastered in 2019 on blu-ray. I decided to give it a shot because I love a good winter horror film, especially a 90's film. Well, sadly, this was one boring film. I fast-forwarded through it, and it had some WTF moments, but was not for my liking.

Clerks
I've lost count on how many times I've watched Clerks, but I enjoy it every time. It's like reuniting with old friends and Dante's terrible day is always a joy to experience.

Night of the Demons (2009)
This 2009 remake is actually quite good. It's sleazy, gory, and just as ridiculous as the original film.

Police Academy
I haven't seen a Police Academy film since I was a kid. There are some serious laugh out loud moments, but the pacing is a bit slow compared to today's films.

Werewolves
This film got a lot of hype for having practical effects and a 90's style storyline, and I agree with that to a certain degree. It's a very forgettable film, but a decent way to spend 90 minutes.

Terminator Salvation
I enjoy this Terminator sequel. I think I just really appreciate seeing the future, which we usually only see in glimpses in the other films.

King on Screen
A wonderful documentary that is extremely well made. I could sit around and listen to Frank Darabont and Mike Flanaghan all day. I do wish it was longer and we got to see more films highlighed.

Jay and Silent Bob Reboot
I've only seen this film once, and this second viewing will be my last. Outside of the "Chasing Amy" scene, this film really doesn't offer much in terms of entertainment.

The Dark Half
After watching King on Screen, I wanted to watch something Stephen King I hadn't seen before. Being a fan of Timothy Hutton in Leverage, I gave The Dark Half a shot and I was rewarded with a very solid film. I liked it a lot more than I expected.

The Rocketeer
I was the prime age to enjoy The Rocketeer when it was released, but I wasn't thrilled with it back then. Now that I have an appreciation for pulp characters, I find a lot to enjoy in The Rocketeer, but I think I'm missing that crucial piece of nostalgia to really make it special to me.

Iron Man
It's been a very long time since I've seen Iron Man and wow is it an enjoyable flick. The CGI is great, because they didn't try to make everything CGI. The jokes land, the characters are charming, and despite being an origin film it's very good.

Solomon Kane
Possibly my favorite sword and sorcery film, this underappreciated gem from the late 2000's is a blast to watch with an amazing score. The CGI is a bit rough, due to some budgeting issues, but this film deserved more eyeballs.

The Damned
This slow moving period piece was just what I was looking for the evening I watched it. It's not going to be for everybody and probably not something I'd watch again, but I did enjoy it.

The Faculty
I've seen The Faculty many times, and it's one of my favorite late 90's horror/sci-fi films. This viewing was just as great as the rest, and I feel the film holds up well. The 4K remaster is also quite good.

I Know What You Did Last Summer
I feel like every time I watch this film, I like it less. It's a perfectly entertaining slasher, but I don't think it holds up as well as Scream or Urban Legend. I do appreciate the soundtrack, but I'm not sure how many more watches are in my future.
